Sheep and lamb inventory in the United States on Jan. 1, 2019, totalled 5.23 million head – down 1 percent from 2018 – according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. NASS released the annual Sheep and Goat Report on Thursday – a month later than normal due to the government shutdown earlier this year.

The 2018 lamb crop, however, showed a slight increase at 3.24 million head. The national lambing rate was 107 lambs per 100 ewes – a 1 percent increase from 2017.

Wool production dropped 2 percent – down to 24.4 million pounds – but the value of that wool increased 16 percent from the previous year to $42.8 million. The average price of American wool in 2018 was $1.75 per pound.

The report shows 16 states where the flock size increased: Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.
