ASOS move hyporcritical

‘ASOS will ban Mohair, Silk, Cashmere and Feathers from its range from 2019’, this is the headline for an article we picked up on Concrete Playground. The article reads – “Asos firmly believes it is not acceptable for animals to suffer in the name of fashion or cosmetics.

If ASOS management took the time to talk to the farmers that grow natural fibres and see first- hand how they care for their animals they would realise just how ridiculous their stand is.

When publicity stunts like this, without basis in fact, it is nothing more than populism for its own sake.

The article states that PETA has applauded this move. As an organisation that professes to have the welfare of animals at heart PETA has also chosen not to take the time to speak with farmers and see first-hand the animal welfare practices that are firmly in place across the wool, cashmere, mohair growing industries worldwide.

And is ASOS suggesting that synthetic clothing they sell are better for the environment, particularly as the issue of microplastic pollution rages internationally? This is surely at best ill-informed and hypercritical.

Synthetic microfibers are particularly dangerous, with the potential to poison the food chain. The fibers’ size also allows them to be readily consumed by fish and other wildlife. These plastic fibers have the potential to bioaccumulate, concentrating toxins in the bodies of larger animals, higher up the food chain. What does PETA say about that?

ASOS would do well to inform themselves better and support the efforts being made by natural fibre growers and processors.

If they would do this they would be achieving far more for the environment than banning a product that is biodegradable and pollutant free.
