Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) published a report last month on the rapid evolution of the profile of the Australian wool clip since 2001/02, showing the changes in micron and quantity. According to this report in 2001/02 the Australian wool clip was about 580,000 million kilograms and the proportion of the clip finer than 24.5 microns was 87.1% with a resulting 12.9% from non-Merino types, being broader than 24.5 microns.

Fourteen years on and the national wool clip has reduced to about 330 million kilograms, the proportions have not surprisingly changed also with now 82.4% of all wools produced being finer than 24.5 microns while the proportion of non-Merino wools has grown from 12.9% in 2001/02 to 17.6% in 2014/15.

The most dramatic reduction can be seen for 21-2 2 micron wools, the production of 21 micron wools has been reduced by more than 60% since 2001 and more than 70% since 1991/92. For 22 micron wool the corresponding figures are 70% and 85%. While there has been a bimodal or “double hump” to the profile of the Australian wool clip for more than a decade, the fact that non-Merino wool production has not dropped to the same dramatic extent as medium micron wools means its proportion of the clip has increased significantly, now 17.6% as mentioned.

The Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee has this month forecast shorn wool production for the current year will further decline by 7.0% to 322 mkg. This reflects a combination of a 4.8% fall in shorn sheep numbers and a 2.3% drop in average fleece weights. The full report, to be found at www.wool.com/forecasts makes for interesting reading, particularly with the significant production changes across the states. ‘
