Australian wool growers – use of National Wool Declarations continues to grow

The AWEX National Wool Declaration (NWD) gives Australian woolgrowers the opportunity to declare their on farm practices and for the world’s wool buyers to in turn reward it. Price premiums for non mulesed (NM), ceased mulesed (CM) and pain relief (PR) treated flocks is still a hot topic for debate but in the meantime there are clear trends surrounding the use of the NWD and the declarations within.

AWI published the latest figures showing that 53.6% of all lots are currently declared (NM, CM, PR, or Declared Mulesed), and the level of declaration continues to grow.

Effectively, the NWD category growth areas are NM and PR. CM is steady at 2%, whereas Declared Mulesed is declining by 1.2% pa, and Non-declared declining at 1.29% pa (mirrors the rate of gain in total declared).

At present rates, 12.2% of the clip is NM or CM, and this is projected to rise to about 14% by 2018/19.

While the rate of PR declaration is increasing (+2.1% pa), the overall rate of PR declaration (21%) remains short of the usage level indicated from grower surveys and product sales (55 – 70%) and may reflect a lack of significant price premiums for declaration of PR status evident in the market to-date.

Action this week- 42,168 bales on offer.
