Members of the Australian NSW Farmers’ Association want to see the National Wool Declaration document made mandatory reports Weekly Times. A motion which states the NSW Farmers support the National Wool Declaration being made mandatory was supported at the conference in Sydney.

Ed Storey from Yass said the wool industry was in a position that meant it now needed to “declare what we produce”. Mr Storey said the use of the declaration was now at 55 per cent, but it needed to be higher. “It will drive market outcomes for our business and help reduce opportunities for regulations opposed by others and it is now one of the key tools to participate fully in the wool market,” Mr Storey said.

Mr Storey said the declaration directly addressed the concerns of wool customers. “It (the motion) is a serious attempt by industry to show leadership and bypass someone else regulating us.”

One speaker opposed it being made mandatory, and said if it was going to be market driven, buyers needed to pay more to those producers that fill out the declaration. Andrew Wood from Armidale said.  “We want to be open and transparent in the wool industry and we need to highlight the good work we are doing as farmers. As far as us being paid for us filling out paperwork that isn’t going to happen.”
