It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of John Dawson, CEO of New Zealand Wool Services International and Chair of the National Council of New Zealand Wool Interests.

John passed way on Saturday, January 4, 2020, peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife Kathy and children Anna and Sam and his extended family.

John worked at Mair Group from 1978 to 1992 and was appointed a director of Mair Wool in 1989.  John joined WSI in 1992 and specialises in international wool marketing where he acquired an in-depth knowledge of markets in the European, Pacific and Asia regions. As one of New Zealand’s longest-serving champions for New Zealand wool, he was awarded the International Wool Trade Cooperation Award. The award was presented at the 31st Nanjing Wool Market Convention at Qufu in Shandong Province, China. He was one of just six global wool industry leaders to receive the award and the only New Zealander.

John Dawson managed the WSI business through a period of great change and it is to his credit that he was to oversee the successful transition of NZWSI from wool merchant and scourer to pure exporter.

Geoff Deakins, formerly CFO has been appointed CEO. He joined NZWSI in 1992 and has been responsible for all financial and administrative activities within the wool industry. ‘We will continue to operate the business unchanged under our two highly respected brands, namely NZ Wool Services and JS Brooksbank. These two trading operations will be led by Andrew Campbell and Nathan Watt. Clients will continue to receive the same service’, says Ton McKenna Director.

On a personal level, I have known John for almost 30 years. I will miss his dry sense of humour and I will miss his company. He will be very sadly missed by all who knew him in the industry.
