International wool trading and processing group, Standard Wool has announced two changes to its board of directors.

Paul Hughes Jnr, formerly Trading and Finance Director, has been promoted to Managing Director with immediate effect. At the same time former Managing Director Paul Hughes Snr moves to the role of Executive Chairman.

With UK headquarters in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Standard Wool are a global group of companies committed to sourcing, processing and supplying superior quality wool and its by-products. From its origins in the 18th Century the group now has operations in the UK, Chile, China, Ireland and New Zealand with annual turnover of £50m.

After a period of ownership by US tobacco interests, Paul Hughes Snr led a management buyout of the group in 2005. His son Paul Hughes Jnr joined the business in 2009 and was appointed to the board of directors in 2014 along with Production Director Mark Andrews and Non-executive Director Ian Marwood.

Paul Hughes Snr commented: “Paul Jnr has demonstrated a real passion for this business and over recent years has increasingly assumed much of the day to day leadership of the group. The time is therefore right for Paul to take over as Managing Director, allowing me to reduce my time commitment in the business whilst still being involved as Executive Chairman. I could not have wished for a better successor to take the group forward whilst maintaining its culture and professionalism.”

Paul Hughes Jnr commented: “I am immensely proud to take over as Managing Director of Standard Wool. Over the last decade Paul Snr has developed the business and created a fantastic platform following the buy-out. The Group is performing strongly and recently our excellent team has been further strengthened by a number of key appointments. We have exciting opportunities available to us and I look forward to taking the business forward supported by superb people in all our locations across the globe.”
