In May this year Südwolle Group, the worsted wool spinner headquartered in Nürnberg Germany, celebrated the 20th Anniversary of production at its facilities in China.

Zhangjiagang Yangste Spinning (ZYS) was established in the city of Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province in 1995. The facility was built in the free trade zone to service the burgeoning textile production in the area around Shanghai. Today it employs around 1400 people, dyes 6,000 tons of material and spins 11,000 tons of yarn each year.

Südwolle Group was a pioneer as a western investor in textile production facilities in China. They say their ongoing investment in China is a testament to their long term view of the wool business and to the success of what was, at the time, a risky commitment.

Since the first spinning mill was opened, 2 further worsted spinning mills and a dyehouse have been commissioned. Last year Südwolle Group purchased a wool treatment plant nearby – so as well as spinning and dyeing, they now have the capacity to produce their own non-chlorine anti-shrink wooltop treatment.

Südwolle Group has witnessed massive changes in China over the last 20 years. Risheng Xia, (Deputy General Manager, Südwolle Group China) describes how “In the 90’s Zhangjiagang was characterized by small-scale, export-focused companies, with simple processes where cheap labour was the main driver of growth. Since then, many textile companies have extended both their scale of production and the sophistication of their businesses to become technically advanced and service-oriented operations.”

The 20th anniversary celebration was timed to coincide with the 2015 International Wool Textile Organization (IWTO) Annual Congress, also held in Zhangjiagang. Over three days there were ceremonies, mill-tours for customers and guests, and a gala dinner for the entire staff of the mill.

Südwolle group is proud of this modern facility that allows them to serve customers around the world with high quality yarns and the new tradition of excellence being built there.
