British Wool Marketing Board offered 2,195,000kgs of wool for sale. The clearance was 94%.

The British Wool index was flat sale on sale at £1.469 clean. Total weight offered 2,195m kg. Total weight sold 2.061m kg. There was a marked increase in demand at todays sale which resulted in a clearance of 94% of a larger offering than of late. The carpet type wools performed very well, recording price gains. The finer wools, whilst well sought after, were generally cheaper. Fine wools – Generally 2-3.5 % cheaper. Medium Wools – Fully firm. Mules – Cotts up to 8% dearer, others 3 – 6% dearer. Cheviots – Hogs Firm, Ewes 2-4% cheaper. Radnors – Up to 3.5% dearer. Welsh – 1.5 – 2.5% cheaper. Swaledale – Fully Firm. Blackface – Greys 3% dearer, others mostly firm.

One UK wool exporter commented that ‘prices are still very low. Returns to wool producers will be the lowest for several years but at least there is a feeling that 2018 will start off well. The volume sold year to date is good and without the shackles of a stockpile in the background it suggests the market has reached rock bottom.’
