2009 will be remembered by the mohair industry as the year when remarkable character was shown as prices during the regular mohair auctions exceeded the 2009 prices, despite the severe international and local economic downturn. The average market indicator also increased by 29% from the beginning of the winter season and by 31% from the beginning of the year, says Deon Saayman, general manager of Mohair South Africa. The average market indicator for the two seasons, compared to 2008, were: 2009 / 2008 Summer R76.59 / kg R72.84 / kg Winter R73.64 / kg R60.79 / kg. “With the exception of the ‘kid’ segment of the market, prices excelled during the latter half of the year, with ‘fine adults’ ending off the year 53 percent higher and ‘strong adults’ 61 percent higher than the opening sale of the year,” says Jackie Gant of Mohair South Africa. Italy has once again come to the fore as the leading importer from South Africa, followed by China and the UK. Exports for the eleven months to end November were 6 percent higher than the corresponding period in 2008, with the increase in exports of ‘kid’ mohair towards the end of 2009, increasing the hopes of a revival of the kid market during 2010. All in all these results bode well for 2010 and local producers are ready to meet increased demand from their international customers. |
